Last week, an accountant I was talking to said he didn’t want to have a presence because it was “just for kids”. This might have been true in 2007 but in 2017, Facebook should be an essential part of the marketing mix for most accounting and bookkeeping firms. Here’s are a few reasons why:

Sheer weight of numbers

Facebook has almost 2 billion users with many spending several hours on it every day. It’s the world’s most popular social media platform and to market your firm effectively online, you cannot afford to ignore it.

It’s not just for kids

While Facebook started as a social network for college students, it’s now used across all age groups as these statistics from the Pew Social Report reveal:

  • 88% of 18–29 year olds use Facebook
  • 84% of 30–49 year olds use Facebook
  • 72% of 50–64 year old use Facebook
  • 62% of 65+ year old use Facebook

In fact, Facebook no longer has “cool factor” amongst young people who are more likely to be heavy users of Instagram or Snapchat. On the other hand, some of the heaviest users of Facebook are “baby boomers” who are more likely to own businesses or have high disposable income. In other words, excellent prospects.

It’s a place for business

Facebook has lots to offer business owners from their own free business page to an advertising program that can deliver high-quality leads for a low cost. I’d go as far as saying that not having a Facebook business page for your firm in 2017 is as bad as not having a website in 2007.

Community counts

Some of the most successful firms don’t just have loyal clients, they have a fanatic community. Facebook is the perfect platform for building an online community of your clients, prospects and partners.

Creating a Facebook Group is free and makes it easy to build an online community. Your community could have a local focus or be focused on a niche or specialization.

These are just four reasons why Facebook has become an essential marketing platform for accountants and bookkeepers. If you’d like help on how to make the most from Facebook, we’re running a free webinar later in July called Facebook Basics.

And we’ve just launched some social media packages where we can take over the set up and management of Facebook and other social media sites like Twitter and LinkedIn.
