How Bizink helped Bookkeeper Buddy get to number 2 in search results

When Mick Lindquist, founder and Chief Buddy at Bookkeeper Buddy, started his bookkeeping business, he combined his corporate expertise with his experience as a contractor. In 2008, after the economy turned, he became the operations manager of a small private school, which rekindled his love of working with books. Four years later, he learned about cloud accounting, which was on the rise, and saw a fantastic opportunity.

Mick’s first client told him Mick could do the books, as long as Mick used Xero. Mick learned Xero and realized virtual accounting gave him an opportunity to help clients across the US from his rural community. Since first embracing Xero, Mick says Bookkeeper Buddy has maintained its focus on technology to help clients, with everything from invoicing to accounts payable, and all bookkeeping-related activities, as well as integrating client systems with cloud solutions.

“We are strictly cloud accounting; I love what technology in the right hands can do,” Mick says. “People want to implement software but don’t know how to do it. That’s where we come in.”

Mick has also focused on Profit First, which teaches business owners to put their profits ahead of their expenses, helping them to grow their profits immediately and chart a course to success.

After starting his business, Mick knew that he needed to market himself. Through Xero, he learned about Bizink and realized Bizink could help him spread the word about his services. In 2020, when Xero ran a contest that would see an accounting or finance student receive a $10,000 scholarship and the CPA or bookkeeping firm that nominated them also win a $10,000 prize, Mick set into action.

 

“I wanted the prize, because you could use the money for marketing and Bizink was one of the three organizations that Xero mentioned the winner could use as an approved vendor. I knew I wanted to work with them. So I was proactive. I went online, emailed deans and professors at schools to let them know about the prize. One of the students I submitted won, so I did, too.”

It took Mick a while to reach out to Bizink, because he was concerned that the marketing wouldn’t work, but his worries were quickly relieved. Bizink provided Mick with an upgraded and revamped website, a monthly newsletter, a lead magnet, a market analysis, and SEO. Since it was completed in August 2020, Mick’s website now lands as the number 2 result in searches for bookkeeping and Profit First, only behind Profit First on the search results page.

“It’s been great. I’ve had no complaints. Everyone I’ve talked with has been pleasurable and it’s been really good. Matt said, ‘Here’s what we’ll do’ and you did everything you said you would. It raised my profile. My website was already good, but I get even rosier compliments on it now. It actually worked.”

Mick advises others who are thinking about getting started on their marketing to jump in, so they have longer to benefit from the results.

“If you’re a business owner, you don’t have the time to do all of it yourself and you’ll never do it as well. Let the experts who do what they do best, do it best. Grow your business, let someone else grow your marketing. Don’t delay. It’s too much to learn on your own. Just go for it.”
